On rotationally driven meridional flows in stars

چکیده

A quasi-steady-state model of the consequences of rotation on the hydrodynamical structure of a stellar radiative zone is derived by studying in particular the role of centrifugal and baroclinic driving of meridional motions in angular momentum transport. This non-linear problem is solved numerically, assuming axial symmetry of the system, and within some limits it is shown that there exist simple analytical solutions. The limit of slow rotation recovers Eddington–Sweet theory, whereas it is shown that in the limit of rapid rotation the system settles into a geostrophic equilibrium. The behaviour of the system is found to be controlled by one parameter only, linked to the Prandtl number, the stratification and the rotation rate of the star.

Gyroscopic pumping of large-scale flows in stellar interiors, and application to Lithium Dip stars

The maintenance of large-scale differential rotation in stellar convective regions by rotationally influenced convective stresses also drives large-scale meridional flows by angular– momentum conservation. This process is an example of “gyroscopic pumping”, and has recently been studied in detail in the solar context. An important question concerns the extent to which these gyroscopically pumpe...

Zeeman-Doppler imaging of active stars V. Sensitivity of maximum entropy magnetic maps to field orientation

In 1989, Semel proposed a new technique (dubbed Zeeman-Doppler imaging or ZDI) for measuring and mapping magnetic fields at the surface of cool active stars from sets of rotationally modulated circularly polarised (Stokes V ) profiles of spectral lines. Two years later, an automatic tool (based on maximum entropy image reconstruction techniques) was developed and checked on a few test cases (Br...

On the Penetration of Meridional Circulation below the Solar Convection Zone II: Models with Convection Zone, the Taylor-Proudman constraint and Applications to Other Stars

The solar convection zone exhibits a strong level of differential rotation, whereby the rotation period of the polar regions is about 25-30% longer than the equatorial regions. The Coriolis force associated with these zonal flows perpetually “pumps” the convection zone fluid, and maintains a quasi-steady circulation, poleward near the surface. What is the influence of this meridional circulatio...

The early star generations: the dominant effect of rotation on the CNO yields

Aims. We examine the role of rotation on the evolution and chemical yields of very metal–poor stars. Methods. The models include the same physics, which was applied successfully at the solar Z and for the SMC, in particular, shear diffusion, meridional circulation, horizontal turbulence, and rotationally enhanced mass loss. Results. Models of very low Z experience a much stronger internal mixin...

On the Penetration of Meridional Circulation below the Solar Convection Zone

Meridional flows with velocities of a few meters per second are observed in the uppermost regions of the solar convection zone. The amplitude and pattern of the flows deeper in the solar interior, in particular near the top of the radiative region, are of crucial importance to a wide range of solar magnetohydrodynamical processes. In this paper, we provide a systematic study of the penetration ...
